I have been a volunteer youth pastor for the past 3 years. I absolutely LOVE working with my students.
Our church is not in a position to be able to pay for a part-time let alone a full-time position. I recently have had my fourth interview with another church for a full-time position. Things are looking really positive, my family and I love the church, the staff, and they are a PD church! I know that I will stay in contact with many of the students through phone calls, text, Facebook etc.
So here is the question….How do you say goodbye to your students? How do you tell them?
I would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and experiences.
Hey Chris, I was in your position a little over a year ago. I had been in a part-time position for 4+ years and the church was in no way able to bring on another full-time staffer, so my wife and I prayed about it every year just after New Year’s.
When we finally felt a peace about leaving & knew where we were going, I taught on the importance of obedience to God’s call - the same call that brought me to that church - and broke the news to them. They were sad of course, but very receptive and encouraging even, which was a huge relief for my wife and I.
We still keep in touch with those students, but if God has called you elsewhere, you must move in faith believing that God has the best interest for the students you’re leaving at heart. Good luck bro.
